Home Reading - Some tips to help your child

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the first term comes to an end, I would like to say thank you for the wonderful effort each of the students has displayed so far this year. Not only have they been hardworking in the classroom and at home, but each and every one of them has also developed a kind and caring attitude which they should be very proud of.

In order for your child to maintain this progress and continue to flourish in class, please remember to read regularly with your child at home and remind them to bring in their home reading book at least once a week.

Below, you will find  a link to some useful questions you can ask your child to help develop their reading further. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's reading, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,
Mr.Meehan

Christmas Play - Songs and Lyrics

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Yesterday, your child should have brought home a copy of the lyrics for the Christmas play which will take place on Friday, December 13th at 7pm. Please do not worry about your child knowing all of the lyrics word for word. A copy of the lyrics has been sent home with every child in school and obviously the expectations are greater for the older students.

For the Year 1 pupils however, we are focusing on the following three songs, for which your child will be on stage. These are:
- Mistletoe Ball
- You've Got To Believe in Christmas
- Magical Sleigh Ride

If you have any further questions or concerns about the Christmas play, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Mr. Meehan

Weather - The Water Cycle

Hi folks,

This week, the pupils of Year 1 have been learning about water and the water cycle. We've been discussing the different stages of the water cycle and the children had some super ideas about how water gets into our houses and comes out of our taps.

Here is a short video we used to help explain the stages of evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

Mr.Meehan

Halloween Celebrations

Hello everyone,

Yesterday, we had great fun celebrating Halloween. As you probably know, there was a parade in the morning and lots of parents came to see the children in their wonderful (and very spooky) costumes.

After that, we played some Halloween games and went 'Trick-or-Treating' in the other classes. The boys and girls were very lucky and each of them took home lots of candy.

Thank you all for the tremendous effort you all made, it was greatly appreciated. I hope you enjoy the photos below of the pupils trying to turn Anson and Jack into Mummies!

Kind regards,
Mr. Meehan

How the World Works - Weather

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This half term our unit of inquiry is 'How the World Works'. We will be learning all about weather, the water cycle and major weather events, such as typhoons, and the effects they have on societies. There will be many different opportunities for pupils to actively learn in this unit and I will be updating the blog regularly to share the students work with you.

If you have been involved in any major weather events, either in Hong Kong or elsewhere, and would like to share your experiences, please don't hesitate to contact me and arrange a suitable time to come into class and discuss it with the students.

In the meantime, here is a short presentation about the different types of weather which we discussed in class today.

Regards,
Mr Meehan

Unit of Inquiry Homework - Who We Are

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Today, your child has brought home some work to complete with you about 'Who We Are'. This is a 4 page booklet which the pupils have until next Thursday to complete. I hope you can follow the instructions on each page, but if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Please note that pages 2 and 3 require the pupils to draw a picture of their Mum and Dad helping the community. This does not necessarily have be a picture of them at work. Perhaps it may be a picture of them cooking for the family, cleaning the apartment or visiting a friend. The key to this work is that the children gain an understanding of how people within a community help other members of that community.

Hope you enjoy doing this with your child. Take care and have a nice weekend!

Once again, thank you to those parents who came along on the visit. Below are some photographs taken during the day.

Kind regards,

Who We Are - Our Local Communities

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please find below some pictures of the wonderful work your children have been completing today.

This week we have been learning about two small (local) communities which the children are part of - Home and School. We have discussed the different members within each community e.g. teachers, students, parents, helpers etc. and have spoken about the responsibilities of each member.

It would be great if you could discuss, with your child, the roles and responsibilities of different members within your family to help them further their understanding of what responsibilities are.

Regards,
Mr Meehan
